Gaborone, Botswana — In a landmark event aimed at strengthening regional collaboration and showcasing Botswana’s cutting-edge digital infrastructure, Botswana Fibre Networks (BoFiNet) recently hosted a high-level delegation from Namibia’s Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) and Botswana’s Ministry of Communications, Knowledge, and Technology (MCKT) for an exclusive tour of the Digital Delta Data Centre (DDDC). The event, held on 25th September 2024, highlighted BoFiNet’s role as a driving force in regional digital transformation and infrastructure development.

Leading the Namibian delegation was Dr George Simataa, Secretary to the Cabinet of Namibia, accompanied by senior officials from Namibia’s MICT, as well as representatives from key government institutions and private sector stakeholders. The primary goal of the visit was to evaluate Botswana’s advanced digital infrastructure and explore potential collaborations that could accelerate digital growth and innovation within the region.

The visiting delegation, accompanied by representatives from Botswana’s MCKT, was warmly received by BoFiNet’s Board Chairperson, Mr Othusitse Lebuletswe, and Acting Project Management Executive, Mr Diphetogo Lefhoko. The guests were given a comprehensive tour of the 400-rack, Tier III-certified data centre, strategically located at the heart of Botswana’s 12,000 km national fibre network. This strategic location positions the DDDC as a regional digital hub, enabling faster and more efficient data exchange for Southern African countries, including Namibia, Angola, and Zambia. The delegation expressed particular interest in the centre’s ability to offer lower latencies and reduced operational costs for cross-border businesses, setting it apart from other facilities in the region.

“Botswana is rapidly positioning itself as a regional digital leader, and the Digital Delta Data Centre exemplifies our commitment to that vision,” said Mr Lefhoko. “As a carrier-neutral, open-access facility, the DDDC offers customers a wide range of connectivity options and the flexibility to connect with multiple carriers and service providers.”

Mr Lefhoko further emphasised the centre’s robust security measures and its capacity to support large-scale cloud computing and disaster recovery needs, making it an ideal choice for businesses seeking reliable and secure data

storage solutions. Managed by a team of Accredited Operations Specialists, the DDDC ensures world-class service and support for all its clients.

The Namibian delegation provided positive feedback, with Dr Audrin Mathe, Executive Director of Namibia’s MICT, praising the facility’s advanced infrastructure and its potential to promote regional digital integration. “We are highly impressed by what we have seen here. The facility is strategically positioned to become a critical digital gateway for Southern Africa. This visit has given us valuable insights into the standards and best practices needed as we develop our own data centre back home, ensuring its success and competitiveness in the region,” Dr Mathe remarked.
